The Secret Slipper 02 small.jpg

Being a cripple is only the beginning of Lia’s troubles. It seems as if Bioti’s goal in life is to make Lia as miserable as possible. If Lia’s purpose was to be a slave, then why did God make her a cripple? How can He make something beautiful out of her deformity?

“Raoul never questioned the death of his daughter until someone reports her whereabouts. If Ellia is still alive, how has she survived these ten years with her deformity? When Raoul doesn’t know who to trust, can he trust God to keep Ellia safe when evidence reveals Bioti’s dangerous character?

“As time brings more hindrances, will Raoul find Ellia, or will she forever be lost to the father she doesn’t even know is searching for her?”

My Review:

This was such a great book! It literally made me cry at the end! It is a fairly short read (I read it in one afternoon), but is definitely worth it. 😉 I can’t say that it really seems much like Cinderella (which I like; as you probably know, I’m not one for romance), but it is still a great book. 🙂 I’m also not one for fantasy, but this book fit to my tastes quite well. 😉 I might have to start trying more Christian fantasy, apparently! It did not have any magic or anything (another thing that I like 😛 ). I’m trying to decide if I should give more details… Okay, I will. 😉 (if you don’t like spoilers, you probably shouldn’t read this next section; I pointed out spoilers specifically, but still…)

There were a bunch of twists to the story (the one that caught me most off guard was SPOILER!! that Galien killed the informer {can’t remember his name right now- lol} SPOILER END!!). I did not expect SPOILER!! Lia to go to the dungeon; but that was a good thing, because then she asked the Lord into her heart SPOILER END!!. It had a great message of trusting the Lord throughout SPOILER!!, like when Raoul prays, etc. SPOILER END!!.

So, basically, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!!! I feel like I’m saying that a lot lately, but it’s really true!! 🙂 Thanks for letting me review it, Amanda!

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*

About the Author

Amanda bio pic.jpg

Amanda Tero is a homeschool graduate who desires to provide God-honoring, family-friendly reading material. She has enjoyed writing since before ten years old, but it has only been since 2013 that she began seriously pursuing writing again – starting with some short stories that she wrote for her sisters as a gift. Her mom encouraged her to try selling the stories she published, and since then, she has begun actively writing short stories, novellas, and novels. If something she has written draws an individual into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, it is worth it!

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

And… Da Interview!

1) About how long did it take you to write The Secret Slipper?

I started “The Secret Slipper” on November 22, 2016 and finished the final draft March 22, 2017 (cool; I didn’t realize it was exactly four months!).

2) Where did you get the idea for The Secret Slipper from?

I had finished “Befriending the Beast” (a spin-off of Beauty and the Beast) as a stand-alone when an author friend asked, “Hey, have you ever considered a father/daughter Cinderella story?” And that is exactly where the inspiration started. I prayed about it, and the Lord supplied the full story.

 3) What is your best tip for wanna-be authors?

Seek the Lord at every stage of writing. Writing is a tough thing, but if it’s what the Lord is leading you to do, He promises to give wisdom to everyone who asks.

Bonus tip: Never stop learning about the writing craft and be critical of your work. That is one of the best ways to get better.

 4) What is your favorite line/quote from The Secret Slipper?

Ooh…tough one…

Probably…“The question is not about the deformity of your body but about the deformity of your soul.”

5) Which character in The Secret Slipper is your favorite?

Jolin. Hands down. He’s the strong, steady, cautious guy, plus encourages Raoul in the Lord.

I know this is getting to be a very long post, but we have one more VERY important thing… A GIVEAWAY!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Leona!
It was so interesting, and I enjoyed talking to the author.
    It was so helpful.

Thank you very much for your helpful reply.

I like to write in my spare time, and I was wondering if you could inform me as to how you write a compelling plot?

        • Amanda Tero says:

          You’re welcome!

Well that’s a hard one to answer. 😉 I’m still working on the answer myself. 🙂 First, I like to find a plot that is believable (it fits my genres; historical fiction, mainly). Then I ask a bunch of what-ifs. For example, “The Secret Slipper.” What if it was a father/daughter? Okay, that gives food for thought. They obviously wouldn’t “meet” at a ball. So how would they meet? Why weren’t they together? Enter Bioti, the nursemaid who is jealous of Lord Kiralyn’s riches and “easy life.” She also serves as the “step-mother.” What is it that keeps Lord Kiralyn separated from his daughter? Part of the answer is Bioti’s wiles. And then Lia (Ellia)…how can her life be believably more difficult? That also links back to Bioti–by her forcing more and more work upon her. The crippling foot is another element that adds a lot to the plot. Because of Lia’s foot, she’s put into a lot more danger (if you’ve not read the book, I’m trying not to give spoilers). 😉
So in a nutshell, explore all of the what-ifs. My books tend to be more character-driven. I like to get “inside” the character and explore their journey–not just Lord Kiralyn’s search for his daughter, but also his spiritual journey of trust in God. The two kind of go hand-in-hand and often, the character’s journey will help your plot out. Because Lord Kiralyn had a hard time trusting in God, it led him to make some more rash decisions. Bioti’s character itself helped the plot along. If you noticed above, many of her choices affected my two main characters–and Bioti is just a side character! So yeah… I tend to know a little more about characters than plot. I hope “talking it out” helped just a tiny bit? Feel free to ask more direct questions if I missed the point altogether. 😀

I really loved this book … I can’t wait to post my review! I can’t decide whether I like this or Befriending the Beast better. They were both so good in their own way …

  3. Snowy says:

    Hi there!
Where will the blog tour be?
How long has Amanda Tero been writing for, and has she published any other books?
    God Bless

    • ilovereading2 says:

The blog tour is on a bunch of different blogs, the list of which is at the end of my post. 😉
I am not sure how long Amanda has been writing for, but she has published other books. If you search her name on Amazon, you can probably find her other books. 🙂

      • Snowy says:

        Thanks Amanda
I’m definitely checking your books out!!
I’ve written a couple of stories (not published), but I’ve always struggled with making characters and how to show their emotions.
        Any advise?

        • Amanda Tero says:

          Thanks!

Characters and their emotions. 🙂 I enjoy that part of the story. It does take adjusting to, but see what you can feel. How would you FEEL if you suddenly discovered that someone you thought was dead was alive? Well, I’d sure feel a bit of unbelief then rushing to see if it’s correct.

I also recommend The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide To Character Expression (by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi). They have a free Kindle book, Emotion Amplifiers, which convinced me to buy the paperback of the thesaurus. 😉

Hope that helps a little. 😀
